NEWPORT, R.I. —Navy Talent Acquisition Group New England held a change of command ceremony, where Cmdr. Calvin S. Beads was relieved by Cmdr. Nicole Scherer as commanding officer, November 6.
Capt. Todd Levant, commodore of Navy Recruiting Region East, officiated the transfer of command as the presiding officer. The event was held at the Marine Detachment onboard Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island.
Cmdr. Beads thanked all officer and enlisted ranks during his farewell speech and expressed full confidence in NTAG New England’s future commanding officer.
“Nicole, what can I say? You are an amazing XO, leader, naval officer, and human being,” Beads said. “You care deeply about our Sailors, civilians, and ensure they have everything they need to succeed. I know without a shadow of a doubt the command will be in good hands under your leadership.”
In parting, Beads highlighted the significance of the recruiters and their daily mission.
“Never forget your job matters and you are important,” said Beads. “Be proud of who you are and what you have accomplished. I am proud of each and everyone one of you. It has been an honor of my lifetime to serve as your commanding officer.”
Capt. Todd Levant, gave remarks as the guest speaker and presented Cmdr. Beads with Meritorious Service Medal for his service as commanding officer and executive officer of NTAG New England.
Cmdr. Scherer, from Malvern, Pennsylvania, illustrated the extent of her predecessor’s leadership during his time as commanding officer.
“The numbers tell the story of your impact: under your tenure these past 3 years, this command sent roughly 4,000 Sailors and Officers to the Fleet,” Scherer said.
“That is nearly enough to man an entire aircraft carrier. Somewhere out there, a flight deck is full, a galley is staffed, and a ship is ready to get underway because of your leadership and the work of this team. Thank you for setting the conditions for future success, and for the example you set.”
NTAG New England, headquartered in Boston, is responsible for the U.S. Navy’s enlisted and officer recruiting, in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Eastern New York.
