US Treasury Staff Urged to Develop $250 Note Design Featuring Trump

(MENAFN) A proposal reportedly backed by the Trump administration has called for the creation of a new $250 US banknote featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait, according to current and former employees of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing cited in reports.

The Washington Post reported that Treasury Department political appointees, including US Treasurer Brandon Beach and senior adviser Mike Brown, repeatedly pressed bureau staff starting last year to begin drafting prototype concepts for the currency. This effort allegedly continued despite established federal guidelines stating that only deceased individuals may be depicted on US banknotes.

Employees who spoke anonymously to the newspaper said Beach directly supplied internal staff with draft mock-ups of the proposed note during August and September. One of the versions reportedly placed Trump’s portrait prominently at the center of the design.

British artist Iain Alexander, who said he produced one of the conceptual designs, claimed that Trump personally approved modifications to the draft, including adjustments such as incorporating US flag-inspired color elements and a commemorative symbol for the nation’s 250th anniversary. He was quoted as saying, “He likes to call me his favorite British artist,”

The report also noted that US currency tradition has excluded living individuals since 1866. Although legislation has been introduced in Congress that would authorize a commemorative $250 bill bearing Trump’s image, it has not progressed through the legislative process.

A spokesperson for the Treasury Department said the Bureau of Engraving and Printing “is conducting appropriate planning and due diligence” regarding the concept.

Staff within the bureau, including its director Patricia Solimene, reportedly raised concerns about legal constraints and procedural requirements. One employee noted that redesigning currency is typically a lengthy process, often spanning six to eight years, especially for higher-denomination bills.

Solimene was reportedly reassigned from her position in April. In a farewell message, she indicated that the move was not voluntary, stating it was “not my choice.”
