News on jobs and human resources in the United Kingdom
Provided by AGPTube drivers had been poised to walk off the job for 24-hour stretches on Tuesday and Thursday, in a standoff over TfL's proposal to voluntarily introduce a compressed four-day working week — a scheduling shift the RMT contends poses serious risks to worker wellbeing and passenger safety.
In announcing the suspension, the RMT credited a late shift in the employer's stance: "at the 11th hour the employer has shifted its position allowing us to further explore our members concerns around the imposition of new rosters, fatigue and safety issues."
TfL welcomed the reprieve, calling the suspension "good news for London."
The relief, however, is conditional. While industrial action penciled in for June 16 and 18 has been formally scrapped, the union has rescheduled fresh strikes for June 2 and 4 as negotiations press on — leaving commuters with little room for comfort.
At the heart of the row is TfL's push to trial a voluntary compressed four-day schedule, a move the RMT insists raises unresolved questions around fatigue management and the safety of passengers on one of the world's busiest transit networks.
The union made its position unambiguous: "The dispute is not over and more strike action will follow if we fail to make sufficient progress."
